Disciple of John

I was reading a MacArthur introduction to the book of John and they were giving evidence that John was the actual author to the book. I've often thought of John as a founding member of the church however I never really picture him disciplining one on one with anyone. At least nobody that we would have heard from. That evidently is not true. Irenaeus was a disciple of Polycarp who was a disciple of the apostle John himself. This is based on a book he wrote some time between 130 and 200 AD. It was in that book that he lists the book of John to have been written by the apostle John. Amazing right?
